Geekery - Linking Calender Apps - Laptop/Internet/Phone

By edward - Posted on 23 November 2009

I like my calendar on my laptop.  Thing is, I also like having it on my phone.  Additionally, with all my traveling for work, I like the notion of having my calendar in the cloud.  This has always been a problem, because I've had a Palm or WinMobile phone and Linux on the laptop.

(the saga continues)

I've never been a fan of MS Outlook, much preferring Mozilla Thunderbird as an e-mail app.Thunderbird has a calendar add-on, Lightning, that's solid and does most of what I want.  Google Calendar has some great add-in calendars (like Arsenal FC match schedules).  There was development on a Lightning-to-Google sync add-on (Provider for Google Calendar), but it was always flaky.  Now that my phone is a G1 (Android-based), I thought I'd re-visit the sync-to-google once again.

I first did a search to see if anyone had written it up lately and came up with this article from 2007.  This is essentially what I did the first time, so now the hope is that the sync add-on has improved (current version was released in October, 2009).

I installed the current version of the sync add-on and crossed my fingers.  My next step was to book a flight itinerary with Delta Air Lines.  Fortunately, they've improved their send-flights-to-Google interface.  I sent the flight info to my Google calendar, and it appeared within seconds in Lightning.

Success!

I never used Google Calender but what I have listen about it The interface of Google Calendar, designed by Kevin Fox (who also designed Gmail and the second version of Google Reader),1Y0-A13 exam is similar to desktop calendar applications such as Microsoft Outlook or iCal on Mac OS X. The Ajax-driven interface enables users to view, add, and drag-and-drop events from one date to another without reloading the page.646-588 exam It supports view modes such as weekly, monthly, and agenda. Users can "quick add" calendar events by typing standard English phrases, such as "Dinner with Michael 7pm tomorrow".642-655 exam Users can also set the number of days to show in their custom view mode.
